Orlando airport transfers and getting around

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is one of the busiest airports in the U.S. and the main gateway to the theme parks. Sorting out your transfer and local transportation in advance makes arrival smooth — here's what to know.

The airport and travel times

From MCO it's roughly 20–25 minutes to Lake Buena Vista and International Drive, about 25–35 minutes to Kissimmee, and around 35–45 minutes to ChampionsGate/Davenport or Winter Garden, depending on traffic. Have your hotel's name and address ready on arrival.

Transfer options

Renting a car at the airport is the most flexible option if you plan to explore beyond the parks. A pre-booked private transfer or town car is an easy, door-to-door option without driving yourself. The Mears shuttle offers shared van service to many hotels, and rideshare apps (Uber, Lyft) operate from designated pickup areas at MCO.

Note that there is no direct commuter rail (SunRail) connection from the airport to the theme-park area, so plan on one of the options above.

Getting around once you're there

If you're staying on Disney property, free buses, monorail and boats connect the resorts and parks, so you may not need a car at all. On International Drive, the I-Ride Trolley is a cheap, frequent way to get up and down the strip. Elsewhere — Kissimmee, ChampionsGate, Winter Garden — a rental car or rideshare is the practical choice, since these areas are more spread out.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rent a car in Orlando?

If you're staying on Disney property and only visiting Disney parks, you can get by on Disney's free transportation. If you plan to visit Universal, SeaWorld, outlying areas or want more flexibility, a rental car makes things much easier.

Is Uber available at Orlando airport?

Yes — rideshare apps operate from designated pickup zones at MCO, alongside taxis, the Mears shuttle and rental car counters.
